If you are in need, we offer classes for beginners – Intro to Handgun & Intro to Shotgun Sports or one-on-one Private Instruction. Once the basics are understood, our friendly and educated retail staff will work to help you to select the best gun.
After getting a feel for your needs, we will show you multiple options to see what feels the best. With our on-site ranges, we can easily take you to test fire guns from our rental fleet to help you narrow down on “the one”. To get started, stop by the store or call/text us anytime!
how to buy
Purchasing a firearm is relatively easy to do, whether it is your first firearm or not. No state permit or license is required in the state of Ohio, since there is no firearm registration in this state. Ohio also does not have waiting periods on firearm purchases.
Once you’ve decided which firearm(s) you’d like to buy, the rest of the process takes only about 15 minutes.
To purchase a handgun at Black Wing Shooting Center:
- You must be 21 years of age or older.
- You must fill out a Form 4473 to be used for your instant background check.
- You must show your driver’s license or state I.D. with current address on either form of identification.
- Anyone who is 21 or older and a resident of Ohio may purchase a handgun in the state of Ohio and take possession of it once the background check is passed.
- Anyone who is 21 or older and not a resident of Ohio may purchase a handgun in this state; however, you may not take possession of the handgun here. The handgun must be shipped to an FFL holder (Federal Firearm License) in your state of residence.
To purchase a rifle or shotgun at Black Wing Shooting Center:
- You must be 18 years of age or older.
- You must fill out a Form 4473 to be used for your instant background check.
- You must show your driver’s license or state I.D. with current address on either form of identification.
- Anyone who is 18 or older and a resident of Ohio and other unrestricted states (check with us for specific states) may purchase a long gun in the state of Ohio and take possession of it, once the background check is passed.
- Anyone who is 18 or older and not a resident of Ohio or an unrestricted state may purchase a rifle or shotgun in this state; however, may not take possession of the long gun here. The long gun must be shipped to an FFL holder (Federal Firearm License) in your state of residence.
* If you have a CCW permit issued by the state of Ohio after March 23, 2015, you are exempt from the NICS-compliant background check for firearm purchases.
Black Wing return policy
All returns must be within 30 days of purchase, accompanied by original receipt and in new condition. Returns may be subject to a restocking fee of 20% or $25, whichever is greater. No returns on special orders, firearms, optics, ammunition, electronics, or gift cards.
WE OFFER LAYAWAY & Financing
Black Wing understands when you find that perfect firearm you’ve been wanting, it might not be the most convenient time to be able to purchase it. Because of this, we offer the option of a 60 day Layaway purchase plan. Our Layaway plan requires 40% of the total cost at the time of sale, 30% after 30 days and the remaining 30% at 60 days.
Financing is provided through GearFire via our online store for purchases over $500 for qualified buyers (terms and conditions here).
WE BUY, TRADE, CONSIGN & APPRAISE YOUR FIREARMS
Black Wing offers fair pricing for anyone interested in selling or trading their firearms. Whether you are interested in selling one firearm or an estate collection, we are here to help you. However, without seeing your specific firearm(s), we cannot provide you with an honest quote. Please bring your unloaded and cased firearm(s) on your next visit and we will gladly provide you a quote and let you know how we arrived at the price. For sizeable firearm collections, please contact us and arrangements can be made for us to visit your location.
We also offer a consignment service which typically generates a greater payout but is not paid out until after the firearm sells. Consignment fees vary from 20%-30% depending on the value of the firearm and number of guns consigned. This fee also includes the listing of the firearm on online auction websites if deemed necessary
Black Wing also provides valuations for insurance and estate planning purposes documented on letterhead. Valuation fee is $125 for first firearm and $40 for each firearm thereafter.
FIREARM TRANSFERS
Black Wing always hopes you check with us first to see if we have the firearm you are looking for. We know it seems convenient to make purchases online but sometimes that is not always the case when you look at the big picture. With the absence of shipping costs and transfer fees, we may be able to save you some hard earned money. Even if we do not have what you are looking for in stock, chances are good we can get it! And remember, if we sell it to you, it comes with our free, no hassle, Lifetime Warranty!
If you have purchased a firearm from somewhere else and would like to have it transferred to Black Wing, the firearm needs to be transferred to us from an FFL or an individual. The information we will require from them is:
- Your name and contact information (phone number and valid email address) so that we may contact you when your transfer is ready to be picked up.
- Make, model and serial number of firearm being transferred
- A copy of their valid FFL (if an FFL) or a copy of their current Driver’s License / State ID Card (if an individual)
Once we have received your firearm, we will need to receive it into our inventory. Normally this means once your tracking information shows your firearm has arrived at Black Wing, it will still take 24-48 business hours for us to have your firearm ready to be picked up due to the large number of packages we receive daily. We will contact you at that time to let you know it is ready.
When you arrive to pick up your new firearm, please remember to have a valid state or government issued ID with you, that has your correct address on it. You will then fill out an electronic 4473, which will run your background check. Once you have successfully completed this process and paid your transfer fee, the firearm is yours to take home.
Firearm Transfers
- Firearms– $75/per serial number
- Suppressor Transfers – $200 per serial number (includes paperwork through SilencerShop and secure storage)
- Short Barrel Rifles / Short Barrel Shotguns – $200 per serial number (includes paperwork through SilencerShop and secure storage)
- Machine Gun Transfers – $200 per serial number (includes paperwork through SilencerShop and secure storage

Please Note: Black Wing takes no responsibility for firearms damaged during shipping, nor do we warranty transferred firearms.
Transfers will be held for 60 days unless a longer time is approved in writing. Any gun left after 60 days will become the property of Black Wing.
NFA firearms must have paperwork started within 60 days of arrival and must be picked up within 60 days of approval.
Firearms that must be returned to the original destination will still incur a transfer fee plus shipping (if no return label is provided).
